How to build one protected focus block

A practical guide to making one focus block easier: one target, phone distance, boundary, and recovery plan.

Do not start with the whole day

A protected focus block is one small unit of deep work. It needs one target, one boundary, one reason to keep the phone away, and one way back when attention drifts.

Why phone distance matters

Ward and colleagues found that smartphone presence can reduce available cognitive capacity even when people are not actively using the phone. That makes distance a practical design choice, not a moral statement.

  • Put the phone outside reach before the block begins.
  • Write one target in plain language.
  • Stop when the block ends instead of turning it into a marathon.

The Rebuilt move

Set a 25 to 45 minute block. Write the target. Move the phone. Close the extra tabs. When you drift, return to the written target instead of reopening the whole planning process.
