Multitasking Is Usually Task Switching

Switching feels productive right up until you count the reload tax.

The hour looked full but the work barely moved

Email open, chat open, the draft in the background, something playing on a second screen. You were busy the whole time. But the draft is still on line three.

The brain was not working on multiple things. It was reloading the same job over and over.

The switch penalty is real and accumulates

Harold Pashler's 1994 research on dual-task interference showed that the brain has a processing bottleneck for demanding tasks. Each jump between tasks requires loading a new context into working memory, and that loading takes time and energy. A shorter uninterrupted block usually produces more than a longer block full of switches.

The residue lingers longer than the interruption

Gloria Mark's research at UC Irvine found that after an interruption, it can take over 20 minutes to fully return to a complex task. You pay not just for the check itself, but for the re-entry cost afterward. A few short checks can wreck the productive feel of an entire work block.

Name one task as the main job for the next 45 minutes. Turn off unrelated notifications and close unrelated tabs. If a stray idea arrives, write it on paper and keep going. Writing it down captures it without paying the switch cost.

Set a manual limit of three to five open tabs during a work block. Fewer visible options means fewer accidental jumps and less fake urgency pulling at attention.

Leave a 5-minute buffer between different kinds of work

Before switching from deep work to messages, or from writing to meetings, take five minutes with no phone and no screen. That gap gives the previous task somewhere to settle instead of bleeding into the next one.

Keep a paper queue for stray thoughts

Put a piece of paper and a pen next to the keyboard. When a task, idea, or worry surfaces mid-block, write it on the queue and go back to work. The thought is captured. The context is intact.

The goal is not fewer ideas. It is fewer exits from the one that matters right now.
