Movement

Tiny Movement Adds Up Fast

One workout helps. The other 14 hours matter more than people want to admit.

One workout cannot offset an otherwise still day

NEAT is all the ordinary movement around life: walking, standing, carrying, stairs, pacing, small chores.

For most people, that background movement matters a lot more than they think.

Sitting turns the engine down

Long sedentary stretches do not just make you stiff.

They dampen metabolic activity too. Research on prolonged sitting shows major drops in enzymes like lipoprotein lipase, which help process fats and support metabolic health. NEAT is the repeated signal that tells the body: still using this machine, thanks.

Movement keeps energy and focus steadier

NEAT is not just a calorie story.

Frequent light movement helps circulation, body temperature regulation, glucose handling, and that less-scientific but extremely real feeling of not turning into soup by 3 p.m. When the body keeps idling, the brain often feels less stalled too.

Quick check

NEAT Check

What happens to your 'fat-burning' enzymes (LPL) after an hour of sitting still?

  1. They increase to compensate for the lack of movement.
  2. They decrease by up to 90%, effectively stalling your metabolic engine.
  3. They stay exactly the same.

Correct. The body responds quickly to repeated stillness, which is why light movement through the day matters so much.

Try this

Take calls on your feet

If the conversation does not require a screen, take it while walking. This is one of the easiest ways to add real movement without needing extra motivation later.

Try this

Use standing in intervals, not as a new prison

If you have a standing desk, rotate instead of locking into one position. Sit, stand, then move. The point is variation, not replacing one static posture with another.

Try this

Make stairs the default for short trips

For one to three floors, take the stairs when it is practical. Small default rules like this work because they happen often and require very little debate.

Try this

Stop trying to sit like a museum exhibit

Shifting, pacing, foot tapping, and other low-level movement are not always bad habits. Sometimes they are the body trying to stay regulated. Give yourself a little more permission to move unless the situation truly needs stillness.

Try this

Walk during 1-on-1 meetings

Walking meetings work well for check-ins and idea sessions. You get more movement and often better thinking with less meeting stiffness.

Key idea

What to remember

NEAT is what stops one workout from having to carry your whole week. Walk when you can, rotate positions, take stairs, and let movement live inside the day instead of only at the gym.
