Your brain notices a threat. The pituitary gland passes the message. The adrenal glands release cortisol.
That is the stress relay in plain English: detect threat, send signal, prepare the body.
This system is great at short, obvious threats. Robert Sapolsky's line is that zebras escape the lion and the stress switches off, while humans keep the threat running in their heads.
It is much worse with emails, vague dread, and endless life admin because those stressors rarely feel finished. The alarm can stay on long after it stops being useful.
