Adenosine is a chemical that builds up in the brain while you are awake. More adenosine means more pressure to sleep. Caffeine works by occupying adenosine receptors, so the brain receives less of the tired signal. The tiredness is still there. It is just blocked from being felt.
When the caffeine wears off, the blocked pressure is still waiting. That is why the crash can feel sudden.
Half can still be active hours later
Caffeine clearance varies widely. Landolt et al. (1995) still detected caffeine near bedtime after a 200 mg morning dose, and the participants' nighttime sleep EEG changed.
Half-life: the time it takes to clear half the caffeine. At 5 hours, a 3 PM coffee still has half its dose at 8 PM.
