Air hunger is a signal, not always danger

That first urge to breathe can feel dramatic.

Often it is your brain noticing rising carbon dioxide. That is discomfort, not automatically an emergency.

Do not train panic

The goal is not to hold your breath as long as possible.

The goal is to respond more calmly to mild breath discomfort, using smaller breaths and longer exhales.

The goal is calmer tolerance, not macho breath holding

Useful training is gentle: slow nasal breathing, slightly longer exhales, and learning not to answer every small discomfort spike with a dramatic inhale.

Hardcore breath-hold contests are a different thing and are not required.

Use walking as the training ground

Try one short walk where you keep the breath nasal for the first 5 to 10 minutes. The moment the urge rises, slow down a little before you bail out completely. That teaches range without forcing it.

Make the exhale slightly longer than the inhale. If you feel strain, make the breath smaller and easier.
