Plan Sleep Around Shift Work

Protect sleep when night, early, or changing shifts keep moving the clock.

Your shift ends when the street wakes up

You close the curtains, silence the phone, and still get a shorter sleep than you wanted. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2025) explains the collision: shift work can demand wakefulness during your biological night, then leave sleep competing with the body's daytime wake signal.

Your clock and your schedule can disagree

Sleep pressure rises with time awake, while the circadian clock changes sleepiness and alertness across the day (Dijk and Czeisler, 1995). A shift can put those two systems on opposite instructions, so being tired does not always make daytime sleep easy (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2025).

The late shift can make attention expensive

In a randomized crossover study of chronic shift workers, Chellappa, Morris, and Scheer (2019) found worse sustained attention, information processing, and visual-motor performance during circadian misalignment, especially after more than 10 hours awake. Ganesan et al. (2019) also found that 52 intensive-care workers got their shortest main sleep between consecutive night shifts.

Protect one main sleep window

For rotating or frequently changing shifts, full body-clock adaptation is usually not a realistic target (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2025). Before the next block of similar shifts, choose the main sleep window you can protect and make the room dark, quiet, cool, and phone-free (Caruso and Chosewood / NIOSH, 2020).

Use a nap as backup

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2025) conditionally supports a nap before a night shift, but rates the evidence very low. Ruggiero and Redeker's 2014 systematic review found mostly lower sleepiness or better performance across 13 small, mixed studies, but no study tested workplace safety outcomes. The guideline also warns that sleep inertia can briefly impair alertness, so leave enough time to feel fully awake before driving or safety-sensitive work (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2025).

Move caffeine away from sleep

Caffeine close to planned sleep can make sleep onset or quality worse (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2025). If you use it, keep it earlier in the shift and choose a stop point several hours before your sleep window (Caruso and Chosewood / NIOSH, 2020).

Bright light during night work may support alertness or partial adaptation, but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2025) rates the evidence very low, and Hawkes et al. (2025) found high-quality review evidence inconclusive. For frequently changing shifts, make the sleep room dark and leave precise phase-shifting light schedules to a sleep professional (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2025).
