What REM and Dreams Can Actually Tell You

REM is a measured sleep stage, while claims that one dream has a fixed meaning are much shakier.

The plot disappears before breakfast

You wake with a whole story in your head. Ten minutes later, one image is left. Stucky (2025) reviewed 69 awakening studies and found that dream reports vary with the awakening method, sleep setting, and the person reporting. No recall is not proof that nothing happened in sleep.

REM is one part of the night

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2022) describes sleep as repeating cycles of non-REM and REM. Deeper non-REM sleep is weighted earlier in the night, while REM periods are weighted later. REM names a measured sleep stage, not a hidden code for what a dream means.

Dreams are not exclusive to REM

Siclari et al. (2017) collected immediate reports after waking people from both REM and non-REM sleep. In both stages, reported dream experience was linked with lower low-frequency activity in posterior cortical regions. Dream reports and REM overlap, but they are not the same thing.

A brain correlate is not a dream decoder

Siclari et al.'s (2017) core comparisons involved 32 participants in non-REM sleep and 10 in REM sleep; a later real-time prediction test used seven. The study found a correlate of reported experience. It did not establish a final brain map or translate dream content into fixed meanings.

Memory links are real, but limited

Hudachek and Wamsley (2023) pooled 16 studies. Task-related dream content was associated with better later memory, but the original studies were small and varied. In sleep-lab studies, the link was significant for non-REM reports, not REM reports. Memory processing may have shaped the dream; the result does not prove that dreaming caused the learning.

Emotion theories are still theories

Schäfer et al. (2020) did not find that a night of sleep generally favored emotional over neutral recognition memory; its REM-stage signal came from eight studies. Pesonen et al. (2024) found few human REM-disruption experiments and large differences in method. Claims that REM dreams reliably process emotion go beyond the evidence.
